Patient was instructed advantages of pursed lip breathing as follows:
- Helps with keeping the airways open for a longer duration of time during exhalation.
- Longer duration of exhalation will help release of trapped air in the lungs
- Releasing trapped air and better emptying of airways will promote deep breathing and accommodation of more fresh air in the next cycle, which improves overall ventilation
- Improved ventilation helps better oxygen transport, reduces anxiety and shortness of breath, and provides relaxation
- Creates a pressure inside the chest, which helps moving air out of chest with little effort, thus reducing the work of breathing and saving more energy for the patient.
- Slows down the respiratory rate per minute, as the duration of exhalation is prolonged
- Pursed lip breathing is easy to practice and can be performed anytime of the day, while resting in the recliner or in the bed.
