Patient was educated on NSAIDs and their mechanism of action as follows:

  1. NSAID stands for Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  2. These are medications that counter the inflammation in the tissues, by reducing swelling, pain, and temperature.
  3. NSAIDs act by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2.
  4. Inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes result in reduced production of prostaglandins.
  5. Since prostaglandins result in swelling of the injured tissues and amplification of the sensitivity to pain, reduction in the production of prostaglandins lead to reduced swelling and decreased sensitivity to pain, which results in pain control.
  6. Some NSAIDs inhibit both COX-1 and COX-2. Some other NSAIDs inhibit only COX-2.
