Patient was educated on natural pacemaker of heart as follows:
- Pacemaker is the site in the heart, which initiates the heartbeat.
- A human heart has a natural pacemaker in the heart. This structure is called SA node or sinoatrial node. This site initiates heartbeat at a rate of 60 – 100 beats per minute.
- Under normal circumstances, in a healthy heart with normally functioning SA node, the beats are evenly spaced out. This evenly spaced out pattern of heartbeats is called the normal heart rhythm or sinus rhythm.
- Under certain diseased conditions of the heart or secondary to the use of certain drugs, the SA node may be damaged. Since the natural pacemaker is damaged, a second structure in the heart, AV node, will assume the job of initiating the beat. This structure is called the reserve pacemaker of the heart.
- In patients, whose natural pacemaker is damaged or defective, an artificial pacemaker is implanted to replace the natural pacemaker, to initiate the regular heartbeat.
