Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Nateglinide use as follows:
- Nateglinide carries the risk of inducing seizures in some individuals. This is a rare and serious side effect secondary to use of Nateglinide. Individuals with history of seizures must inform their physician about it and discuss regarding their safety with nateglinide intake. Report to your doctor for further recommendations in the event of presentation with seizures following nateglinide intake.
- Observe compliance with taking your daily blood sugar readings, as recommended. Log maintenance of all the blood sugar readings helps for a comparative feedback, as to how well the drug is helping control the blood sugars. This can help your physician make necessary changes on your medication dose and suggest other treatment measures to help your blood sugar numbers fall into the target range. Also, observe compliance with any other regular diabetic lab work ordered, such as, hemoglobin A1c, which tells how your average blood sugars have been doing over the past 2 to 3 months.
- Notify your doctor, if the blood sugar continues to be high, despite compliance with nateglinide intake as recommended. This can assist your doctor with revising the dose of nateglinide or adding another medication or changing the treatment plan altogether to help better control your numbers on blood sugar. Also, notify your doctor regarding any continuing or worsening unpleasant side-effects of nateglinide use, so that, your treatment plan could be revised.
- If the blood sugars are getting too low with nateglinide use, despite compliance with recommended nutrition and calorie intake, your dose of nateglinide may need to be revised or change of plan considered. Notify your physician regarding any overly corrected blood sugars with nateglinide use, resulting in episodes of hypoglycemia with extremely low blood sugars.
