Patient/caregiver was educated on therapeutic uses of metaxalone as follows:
Metaxalone is used for relieving the muscle pain and spasms caused by various musculoskeletal disorders.
Back & neck pain
- Prolonged malposition, occupational and sports injuries involving the back and neck, can lead to involuntary muscle contractions or spasms contributing to back & neck pain, flaccidity, weakness, and compromised function.
- Metaxalone by controlling the spasms, helps with easing the pain and discomfort and contribute to improved function.
Arthritis involving the back
- Arthritis involving the vertebrae can exert pressure on the spinal cord, inflame, irritate, and damage the nerves running along the spinal cord. This can result in abnormal muscle tone, muscle spasms, and pain & discomfort.
- Metaxalone intake can contribute to sedation, relief of muscle spasms, thus leading to improved pain control.
Disc prolapse or rupture
- Individuals with history of intervertebral disc prolapse or rupture can present with increased pressure upon and inflammation of nerves running along the spinal cord. This can result in abnormal muscle tone, muscle spasms, and pain & discomfort.
- Metaxalone intake can contribute to sedation, relief of muscle spasms, thus leading to improved pain control.
Tension headaches
- Tension headache is a diffuse pain in the head, often precipitated by poorly controlled stress in life.
- This can present as mild to moderate headache with a feeling of tight band around the head, involuntary muscle contractions in the face, neck, & scalp, and heightened sensitivity to pain.
- Metaxalone use, along with use of other medications such as, pain killers, can help with controlling the spasms and relief from pain & discomfort.
- Metaxalone use, by depressing the brain and spinal cord, leads to sedation and dizziness, contributing to overall pain relief.
