Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Cinacalcet as follows:
- Bone resorption and remodeling are continuous processes that must take place in a controlled balance to maintain bone strength and blood calcium levels.
- Cinacalcet, by mimicking the action of calcium in the blood, reduces the stimulation for secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland.
- Reduced parathyroid hormone secretion contributes to reduced resorption of bone and reduced release of calcium from the bone into the blood.
- Most of the side-effects of the medication stem from reduced bone resorption and consequent low levels of blood calcium.
- The side-effects of Cinacalcet vary widely, based on the dose the medication and extent of hypocalcemia.
