Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses of Cinacalcet as follows:
By inhibiting the resorption of bone, Cinacalcet will prevent weakening and thinning of the bone and inhibit development of osteoporosis.
Chronic kidney disease
- Vitamin D3 synthesized in the kidney plays a key role in the absorption of calcium.
- Individuals with poor renal function have compromised synthesis of vitamin D3, which contributes to reduced calcium absorption into the blood.
- Low calcium level in the blood stimulates increased secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland.
- The secreted parathyroid hormone from the gland will help resorption of bone and release calcium from the bone into the blood, thus restoring the level of calcium in the blood to optimum levels.
- In the process of restoring calcium levels to normal, parathyroid hormone can weaken and thin the bones and lead to development of osteoporosis.
- These individuals can be treated by administering supplements for vitamin D3 and calcium.
- Cinacalcet administration in these individuals, by mimicking the action of blood calcium, reduces the stimulation for secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland, thus inhibiting the bone resorption and reduced loss of calcium from the bone.
