Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses of Cinacalcet as follows:

Closely regulated optimum levels of calcium are needed for the normal function of vital organs, such as, heart, muscle, and nerves. Cinacalcet, by inhibiting extreme elevation of calcium levels in the blood, helps with maintaining normal physiological function of various vital organs in the body.

Parathyroid tumors

  • Tumors of the parathyroid gland will result in increased secretion of parathyroid hormone.
  • The excess parathyroid hormone secretion, over a period of time, can result in increased resorption of bone and loss of calcium from the bone.
  • This skeletal loss of calcium can weaken and thin the bones and lead to development of osteoporosis.
  • Cinacalcet, by mimicking the action of blood calcium, reduces the stimulation for secretion of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid gland, thus inhibiting the bone resorption and contribute to reduced loss of calcium from the bone.
  • This action of Cinacalcet can help prevent weakening and thinning of the bone and inhibit development of osteoporosis.
