Patient was educated on measures to prevent aspiration and improve swallow safety as follows:

  1. Swallowing difficulty with risk for aspiration is a common finding in the senior age group.
  2. Individuals can present with dysphagia, secondary to various conditions, such as, diminishing muscle tone, stroke involving the muscles of the pharynx and esophagus, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.
  3. Care must be exercised in this group of population to prevent aspiration of food and liquids into the airway, leading to recurrent pneumonia, shortness of breath, and choking.
