Patient was instructed regarding management measures for varicose veins as follows:

  1. Wearing compression stockings can help squeeze the leg muscles and promote blood flow up along the veins of lower extremities. You can have the stockings on for the whole day and get them off before going to bed in the night, to have them back on again before getting out of bed in the morning. These stockings offer graduated compression, with the strongest pressure exerted at the ankles and gradually decrease in intensity, as the stocking ascends up the limb.
  2. Observing compliance with low salt diet can help reduce fluid retention and swelling in the lower extremities and promote comfort.
  3. Lack of physical exercise and loss of muscle tone leads to excessive pooling of blood in the large veins of lower extremities. Mild to moderate exercise, as endurance allows, can improve muscle tone, promote better emptying of veins, and prevent pooling of blood in the lower extremities, thus reducing the risk of developing varicosities.
