Nurse educated patient and caregiver on management measures for varicose veins as follows:
- Avoid crossing the legs during sitting, as this posture can obstruct venous return from the legs to the heart and retain more blood volume in the legs, thus contributing to symptoms of orthostatic hypotension.
- Prolonged standing offers significant effect of gravity, for blood volume in the veins of lower limbs to overcome, to be able to reach the heart. So, avoid standing for prolonged periods of time.
- Elevate your legs lying down in the bed, using 4 pillows under your ankles, can help increase venous return to the heart and empty the veins in the legs, thus reducing accumulation of blood and preventing distention of veins. Periodical elevation of legs for 10 – 15 minute intervals can significantly help reduce accumulation of blood in the veins and prevent development of varicosities.
