Patient was educated on measures to be observed during an acute attack of angina as follows:

  1. Notify the caregiver and call 911 regarding the chest pain.
  2. Stop all activity and take rest, so as to prevent any exacerbation of the chest pain.
  3. Do not panic. Panicking can increase the stress levels and further compromise the cardiac muscle, thus deteriorating the chest pain. Practice slow and deep breathing and alternative stress management techniques, to help manage the stress better.
  4. Observe compliance with the sublingual nitroglycerin, if you are prescribed one by your physician, to be used in emergency. Placing this medication under the tongue helps with quicker absorption of the medication into the blood stream. Nitroglycerin is a vasodilator and helps with relaxing the coronary blood vessels. This relaxation of coronaries allows more blood to pass through, to the compromised cardiac muscle and thereby, helps relieve the angina pain. If you are not prescribed one by your physician, you can check with your physician during your follow-up visit, to see if this measure would be considered.
