Patient was educated on management measures for constipation due to irritable Bowel Syndrome as follows:
- Maintain compliance with recommendation for daily volume of fluid intake. A fluid intake of 2.5 – 3 liters is usually recommended.
- Adding food sources rich in insoluble fiber to the diet can offer relief in patients with constipation. Insoluble fiber adds more water to the stool by extracting more water from the large intestine, which softens the stool. Soft stool will be easier to pass.
- Avoid food sources with high amounts of soluble fiber, as soluble fiber will make the stools further hard.
- But, adding food sources with high insoluble fiber to the diet can sometimes increase symptoms of bloating in patients with constipation. Please report to your physician or home health personnel in the event of any exacerbation of symptoms of bloating and distension.
