Patient was educated on role of micronutrients in the diet as follows:

  1. Micronutrients are nutrients that are also very essential to the human body.
  2. These nutrients are needed in smaller quantities and are mainly divided into vitamins and minerals.
  3. There are about 28 micronutrients, putting together all the vitamins and minerals needed by the body, such as, vitamins belonging to B-complex group, Vitamins A, D, E, K, minerals such as, sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium.
  4. Vitamins of B-complex group play a significant role in the body as coenzymes for metabolism and normal synthesis of red blood cells.
  5. Vitamin D plays a significant role in needed calcium absorption from the food in the intestines. Free radicals are toxic compounds generated in the body, when the body converts food we eat into energy.
  6. Vitamin E plays a significant role as an antioxidant, helping to protect the body against the damage done by these free radicals.
  7. Vitamin K plays a significant role in blood clotting and regulating thickness of blood.
  8. Micronutrients such as sodium and potassium are needed for normal function of vital organs, such as, nerves, brain, muscles, and heart.
  9. Calcium is a micronutrient needed for maintaining structural integrity of bones.
