Patient was educated on role of micronutrients in the diet as follows:
- Micronutrients are nutrients that are also very essential to the human body.
- These nutrients are needed in smaller quantities and are mainly divided into vitamins and minerals.
- There are about 28 micronutrients, putting together all the vitamins and minerals needed by the body, such as, vitamins belonging to B-complex group, Vitamins A, D, E, K, minerals such as, sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium.
- Vitamins of B-complex group play a significant role in the body as coenzymes for metabolism and normal synthesis of red blood cells.
- Vitamin D plays a significant role in needed calcium absorption from the food in the intestines. Free radicals are toxic compounds generated in the body, when the body converts food we eat into energy.
- Vitamin E plays a significant role as an antioxidant, helping to protect the body against the damage done by these free radicals.
- Vitamin K plays a significant role in blood clotting and regulating thickness of blood.
- Micronutrients such as sodium and potassium are needed for normal function of vital organs, such as, nerves, brain, muscles, and heart.
- Calcium is a micronutrient needed for maintaining structural integrity of bones.
