Patient was educated on long-acting and short-acting Beta-2 agonists as follows:

  1. Based on the duration of action, Beta-2 agonists are classified into long-acting and short-acting groups.
  2. Short-acting Beta-2 agonists start acting in about 1 to 5 minutes and can be effective for a duration of 3 to 4 hours. Short-acting Beta-2 agonists are used for treating mild intermittent symptoms of asthma and COPD, who are stable without any gross exacerbation. Since they act quick, they are used as rescue medication during acute episodes of exacerbation of shortness of breath and dyspnea.
  3. Long-acting Beta-2 agonists start acting slowly in 30 to 45 minutes and can be effective for 12 to 24 hours. Long-acting Beta-2 agonists are used for treating serious persistent symptoms of asthma and COPD, who are in continuous distress with repeated exacerbations.
