Patient was educated on how to limit intake of sodium through the diet as follows:

  1. Season your foods with spices, herbs, lemon, ginger, garlic, and pepper instead of salt and eliminate the salt shaker from the dinner table.
  2. Try keeping yourself away from frozen meals and canned foods.
  3. Eliminate salty foods and snacks from your diet.
  4. Pick the low salt versions or reduced salt versions, while picking the grocery.
  5. Always read the label before you buy it. When reading food labels, a general rule is to pick foods that are only less than 140 mg of sodium per serving.
  6. Sea salt is no better than regular salt.
  7. Salt substitutes are sometimes made from potassium, so read the label. Too high potassium also is not good for your heart.
  8. Also, if you have any heart conditions and renal function compromise, your doctor might want you to be on a low potassium diet as well.
  9. Try eating more home cooked meals and avoid frozen and prepackaged meals.
