Patient was educated on how to limit intake of sodium through the diet as follows:
- Season your foods with spices, herbs, lemon, ginger, garlic, and pepper instead of salt and eliminate the salt shaker from the dinner table.
- Try keeping yourself away from frozen meals and canned foods.
- Eliminate salty foods and snacks from your diet.
- Pick the low salt versions or reduced salt versions, while picking the grocery.
- Always read the label before you buy it. When reading food labels, a general rule is to pick foods that are only less than 140 mg of sodium per serving.
- Sea salt is no better than regular salt.
- Salt substitutes are sometimes made from potassium, so read the label. Too high potassium also is not good for your heart.
- Also, if you have any heart conditions and renal function compromise, your doctor might want you to be on a low potassium diet as well.
- Try eating more home cooked meals and avoid frozen and prepackaged meals.
