Patient was educated on lifestyle modifications to prevent development of hemorrhoids as follows:

  1. Use pain killers only sparingly. Practice alternative relaxation methods for pain management. Limiting use of pain killers and laxatives, only as needed, can help prevent constipation and eliminate the need to strain at stool.
  2. Having physical activity, as tolerated, can improve the constipation and help promote easy bowel movement.
  3. Do not ignore the urge. Ignoring the urge to use the toilet, can result in too much water being absorbed in the large intestine, leading to hardening of stool, thus making it difficult to move.
  4. Stay away from unhygienic practices of sitting on the toilet for extensive periods of time. This will help eliminate undue pressure on the veins in the anorectal region and thereby, prevents development of hemorrhoids.
