Patient was educated on lifestyle modifications to prevent development of hemorrhoids as follows:

  1. Increasing the amount of insoluble fiber in the diet can add bulk to the stool. Adding bulk to stool will draw more water to it from the intestines and keeps the stool soft. This will be easier to pass during bowel movement and eliminates the need to strain at stool.
  2. Observe compliance with daily fluid intake requirement of about 3 liters a day, unless an individual is placed on any fluid limitation, secondary to any cardiac conditions or dialysis dependent states. Compliance with fluid intake will keep the stool soft and eliminates the need to strain at stool.
  3. Having a cup of prune juice everyday can help promote easy bowel movements and eliminates the need to strain at stool.
  4. Do not abruptly increase food sources for soluble fiber in your diet. Doing so, can slow the bowel movements, cause constipation, and potentiate development of hemorrhoids.
