Patient was educated on late findings of peripheral artery disease as follows:

  1. If the compromised blood supply continues for prolonged period, severe ischemia of the extremity can occur resulting in pain in the extremity even at rest.
  2. In the initial stages of this condition, gravity helps to some extent to provide blood supply to the distal extremity.
  3. But, as the condition progresses, the blood vessels are further compromised and even gravity will not help increased blood flow to the distal extremity.
  4. This rest pain is particularly experienced in the sole of the affected lower extremity, when the feet are elevated, such as when in bed.
  5. Compromised blood supply can result in compromised sensitivity and neuropathy in distal extremities, which can lead to development of non-healing ulcers and tissue loss. These ulcers are at risk to get infected and turn gangrenous.
