Patient was educated on large intestines and its functions as follows:
- Large intestine is the loop of intestine that connects small intestine and anus.
- Large intestine has 4 parts in it
- Cecum
- Colon
- Rectum
- Anal canal
- Large intestine receives all the undigested material from the small intestine, which has significant amount of water content in it.
- This water can be reabsorbed and utilized for the body needs. Losing this water in the stool can result in dehydration.
- The colon in the large intestine helps to absorb this water content from the undigested material and the rest is eliminated from the body as formed and solid stool.
- The bacteria living in the large intestine synthesize vitamins, such as vitamin K and biotin. They also help in converting the undigested waste into stool.
