Patient was educated on irritable bowel syndrome as follows:

  1. Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic condition that affects the smooth muscle of the large intestine.
  2. The smooth muscle of the intestines contract and relax in an orderly pattern and move the food from the stomach through all the parts of the small and large intestines, thus helping in the process of digestion and absorption.
  3. This condition arises from contractions of the smooth muscle of the intestines that are either too weak or too strong. Patients can alternate between these two patterns on and off.
  4. Contractions that are too strong and prolonged can result in severe abdominal pain, cramping, gas production, and diarrhea.
  5. Weaker contractions of the intestines can result in bloating and constipation.
