Patient/caregiver was educated on indications for ileostomy as follows:

Cancer of the large intestines:

  1. Cancer of the large intestines (colon & rectum) and their consequent treatments, such as, surgery or radiation can result in severe injury and inflammation.
  2. An ileostomy opening proximal to the involved large intestines can help elimination of stool & hygiene, allowing an opportunity for the distal involved intestine to heal.

Diverticulitis:

  1. Diverticula are small, outward bulging pouches that can form along the lining of the large intestine, mainly the colon.
  2. These pouches usually form at naturally weak spots along the colon, which give way due to pressure.
  3. Occasionally, these formed pouches can get inflamed or infected, resulting in severe tenderness & abdominal pain, discomfort, nausea & vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, and blood in the stool.
  4. Depending on the site of diverticuli involved, an ileostomy opening proximal to the inflamed intestinal segment can help elimination of stool & hygiene, allowing an opportunity for the affected intestine to heal.

Severe trauma:

  1. Extensive trauma involving the abdomen and lower pelvis during accidents can result in damage to the intestines, resulting in severe tenderness & abdominal pain, discomfort, nausea & vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, and blood in the stool.
  2. Depending on the site of intestines involved the trauma, an ileostomy opening proximal to the damaged intestinal segment can help elimination of stool & hygiene, allowing an opportunity for the affected intestine to heal.
