Patient/caregiver was educated on indications for ileostomy as follows:
Cancer of the large intestines:
- Cancer of the large intestines (colon & rectum) and their consequent treatments, such as, surgery or radiation can result in severe injury and inflammation.
- An ileostomy opening proximal to the involved large intestines can help elimination of stool & hygiene, allowing an opportunity for the distal involved intestine to heal.
Diverticulitis:
- Diverticula are small, outward bulging pouches that can form along the lining of the large intestine, mainly the colon.
- These pouches usually form at naturally weak spots along the colon, which give way due to pressure.
- Occasionally, these formed pouches can get inflamed or infected, resulting in severe tenderness & abdominal pain, discomfort, nausea & vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, and blood in the stool.
- Depending on the site of diverticuli involved, an ileostomy opening proximal to the inflamed intestinal segment can help elimination of stool & hygiene, allowing an opportunity for the affected intestine to heal.
Severe trauma:
- Extensive trauma involving the abdomen and lower pelvis during accidents can result in damage to the intestines, resulting in severe tenderness & abdominal pain, discomfort, nausea & vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, and blood in the stool.
- Depending on the site of intestines involved the trauma, an ileostomy opening proximal to the damaged intestinal segment can help elimination of stool & hygiene, allowing an opportunity for the affected intestine to heal.
