Patient/caregiver was instructed upon indications for Tamsulosin use as follows:

  1. Prostate and the neck of the urinary bladder are richly supplied with smooth muscle, which controls the pattern of urine flow. Increased tone and contraction of this smooth muscle can result in obstruction to urine flow. Relaxation of this smooth muscle helps with smooth and uninterrupted flow of urine.
  2. Tamsulosin use can help with reducing the tone and relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate and neck of the urinary bladder, thus promoting smooth and uninterrupted flow of urine. It can be used to provide relief of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia/hypertrophy,
  3. By relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate and neck of the urinary bladder, Tamsulosin can provide relief with difficulty initiating the stream of urine.
  4. By improving urine flow rate, Tamsulosin can help provide relief with incomplete bladder emptying and reduce urinary retention and risk of urinary tract infections.
  5. Also, promotion of bladder emptying with Tamsulosin use can provide relief from frequency and urgency. This helps to reduce frequent trips to the restroom during the night, which contributes to having a restful sleep.
