Patient/caregiver was instructed upon Imodium and mechanism of action as follows:

  1. Imodium is a medication used to reduce the intestinal hyper motility and reduce the contractions of intestinal smooth muscle.
  2. By reducing the contractions and hyper motility of the intestines, Imodium slows down the transit and increases the transit time of intestinal contents.
  3. Increasing the transit time of intestinal contents helps with increasing the amount of time the contents stay in the intestine.
  4. Increased intestinal transit time contributes to increased absorption of fluid and electrolytes from the intestinal contents.
  5. Increased absorption of fluid and electrolytes from the intestinal contents helps with reducing loss of fluid and electrolytes in the loose diarrheal stool.
  6. By reducing loss of fluid and electrolytes in the stool, Imodium helps with reducing fecal volume and increasing the fecal density.
