Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses of imipramine as follows:

Major depression

  • Imipramine, by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline, enhances the actions of these chemicals in the nerve cells.
  • This helps with improved communication, appropriate desired nerve stimulation, thus contributing to controlling symptoms of depression, such as, disturbed sleep, diminishing appetite, compromised energy levels, exhaustion, and lack of interest in activities of daily living.

Schizophrenia and psychosis

  • Imipramine can be used to control the agitation and anxiety and slowdown the racing thoughts associated with schizophrenia and psychosis.

Bipolar disorder

  • Imipramine can be used along with other antipsychotics for management of symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Anxiety

  • Inhibition of serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake with imipramine contributes to improved relaxation, promotion of feelings of contentment and happiness.
  • So, imipramine can be used for mood enhancement and management of agitation and anxiety.
