Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Sensipar as follows:
- Continue taking sensipar as ordered, even if you experience relief from symptoms of altered calcium levels in the blood and hyperparathyroidism. Sudden discontinuation of sensipar intake, after prolonged use, can result in seizures, arrhythmias, nervousness, and anxiety. Discontinuation on sensipar use must be planned and withdrawn slow and gradual, under your physician’s guidance.
- Individuals with chronic renal failure, who are placed on dialysis, must observe compliance with doctor visits, dialysis schedule, and dietary limitations suggested, without fail.
- Optimum serum calcium levels are very important for normal cardiac function. Sensipar, by reducing the serum calcium levels, can result in poor cardiac function, lowered heart rate, and in severe cases also lead to development of cardiac arrhythmias. Upon sensipar intake, individuals with history of cardiac complaints can present with further worsening of cardiac functional status, leading to severe debility. Sensipar must be used with caution in such individuals, with cardiac function being evaluated periodically. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of cardiac conditions, if any, and your safety with sensipar intake. Report to your physician immediately regarding any fresh episodes or exacerbation of poor cardiac function, such as, episodes of chest pain, altered heart rate, palpitations, dizziness, and shortness of breath, for a change in plan of care to be considered.
