Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Sensipar as follows:
- Optimum serum calcium levels are very important for normal muscle contraction and activity. By lowering serum calcium levels, sensipar carries the risk of inducing/aggravating muscle spasms, diffuse muscle weakness, exhaustion, and in severe cases, even cause seizures. Sensipar must be avoided or used with caution in individuals with history of muscle spasms and seizures, with neuromuscular functions being evaluated periodically. Discuss with your physician regarding your history of muscle spasms and seizures, if any, and your safety with sensipar intake.
- Sensipar is extensively metabolized in the liver, to inactive metabolites that are mostly excreted in urine. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of sensipar can be compromised. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in increased risk for side-effects and consequent toxicity. So, sensipar could be avoided in individuals with hepatic dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with periodical monitoring for liver functions and development of any toxic symptoms.
