Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Mysoline as follows:

  1. Mysoline only prevents the seizures from happening by reducing the excitation and rapid firing of the nerves. But, Mysoline does not fix the actual condition causing the seizures. Continue taking Mysoline as ordered, even if you experience relief from the symptoms. Abrupt discontinuation on Mysoline intake can result in recurrence of seizure episodes and life-threatening status epilepticus. Discontinuing the medication should only be on your physician’s recommendation.
  2. Sudden discontinuation of Mysoline intake, after prolonged use, can result in onset of severe withdrawal symptoms, such as, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, and anxiety. This can also increase the potential for recurrence of seizures and life threatening status epilepticus. Discontinuation on Mysoline use must be slow and gradual, using tapering doses.
  3. Mysoline is partially metabolized in the liver to many active metabolites. If liver function is grossly deficient, the metabolism of Mysoline can be compromised. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in increased risk for side-effects and consequent toxicity. So, Mysoline could be avoided in individuals with hepatic dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with dose adjustments, periodical monitoring for liver functions and close watch for development of any toxicity symptoms with the medication.
