Patient/caregiver was educated on administering Semaglutide as follows:
- Semaglutide comes as a prefilled pen and is used as a once-a-week administration subcutaneously for control of blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
- Semaglutide is injected subcutaneously, under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.
- Before every use, make sure the medication in the pen is clear and not cloudy. Refrain from using any pen with cloudy appearance of the medication and let your doctor know about it.
- Prep your pen with a new needle before every use. Do not reuse needles or share the needles with other patients. Pull off the outer and inner needle caps to expose the needle.
- Select the appropriate dose by turning the dose adjustor, until the dose counter displays the dose your doctor prescribed.
- Wipe the skin at the chosen site for injection using an alcohol swab and let it air dry. Do not forget to rotate the injection sites. Maintaining a diary listing the sites used every week can help with rotation of injection sites.
- Inject the needle into the skin and press the dose dispensing button on the pen. Hold the needle under the skin with dose dispensing button pressed, until the dose counter shows 0 and the entire dose of medication is dispensed.
- Remove the needle from the injection site, withdraw the needle from the pen, and discard it safely into the sharps container.
- Do not rub on the site of injection.
- Cap the pen to protect the medication from exposure to light and store the pen either refrigerated or at room temperature without needle attached.
- Unused Semaglutide pens must be stored refrigerated until the expiration date shown on the label. Do not use expired pens.
- Used Semaglutide pens can be stored either refrigerated or at room temperature without needle attached for 56 days. After 56 days of use, Semaglutide pens must be discarded even if some medication is left in the chamber. Maintaining a diary listing the date when you started using the new Semaglutide pen can help keep track of the 56-day disposal.
