Patient/caregiver was educated on measures to manage and prevent development of hives as follows:

  1. Individuals with history of hives must avoid having any beautification indoor plants and flowers, to prevent exposure to pollen and flare-up of hives.
  2. Having the maintenance of filters on your heating systems and air conditioners performed on schedule and replacing them timely can help avoid exposure to pollen and dust mites.
  3. Maintain a diary for food and medication allergies and update the diary as allergic symptoms are noted for any new food and medication sources. Common dietary allergens with a potential to trigger hives activation in individuals include milk & dairy products, wheat, barley, egg protein, seafood, and soy. Allergy to antibiotics like penicillin, NSAID pain killers like ibuprofen and naproxen, Sulpha-containing drugs like Bactrim and glyburide is very common among medication allergies. Individuals with history of frequent exacerbation of hives must exercise extra caution while eating out or taking any new medications, especially when they are not sure of the ingredients.
  4. Using a hygrometer can help keep a check on the indoor humidity. Maintaining the indoor humidity below fifty percent with the help of a dehumidifier can help prevent exposure to mold & dust mites, improve air quality, and thus prevent activation of hives.
