Patient/caregiver was educated on measures to manage and prevent development of hives as follows:
- Regularly apply moisturizing cream to the involved skin. You can also apply coconut oil, sesame oil, olive oil, or jojoba oils to moisturize the irritated skin. Moisture prevents excessive drying of skin and hives activation.
- Have stock of OTC antiallergy medications readily available at home can help, as intake of medication at the earliest notice of hives activation can help prevent further worsening of the condition. Also, applying OTC 1% hydrocortisone cream to the irritated skin can offer relief and help ease the itch.
- Use mild soaps, shampoos, deodorants, and perfumes, as they could contain chemicals that could act of triggers for activation of hives.
- Avoid exposure to pollen by limiting outdoor time, especially during spring season. Dry and windy days can be especially risky due to the high pollen count and so, staying indoor on such days with doors and windows closed can help prevent exposure to pollen. Individuals with history of pollen allergy must avoid lawn and gardening activities to avoid pollen exposure. Having a pollen mask on during outdoor activities can provide extra protection.
