Patient/caregiver was educated on indications for pureed diet as follows:
- Bridge between liquid diet and normal diet- Clear liquid diet is recommended temporarily for some individuals during preparation for and recovery from some medical procedures. The goal of clear liquid diet is to keep the stomach and intestines clear and to limit strain on the digestive system. Normal diet could be resumed once the recovery from the procedure is complete. Pureed diet could be recommended for some individuals, as a bridge, to help an easy transition from clear liquid to normal diet.
- Dislocated or broken jaw- Dislocated or broken jaw can limit the movement of jaw bones, to promote healing and so, individuals with jaw injury can have trouble with chewing solid food and difficulty swallowing. These limited jaw movements require consumption of pureed diet, as the soft texture of the food reduces the need for chewing and is easier to swallow.
- Cancer therapy- Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can result in unpleasant side-effects such as, oral sores and bleeding gums. Individuals undergoing cancer treatment can present with difficulty chewing and swallowing, secondary to the oral side-effects of the therapy measures. Pureed diet recommendation in such individuals can reduce the need for chewing and so, is easier to swallow.
