Patient was instructed on some broad guidelines regarding ADA diet as follows:

  1. Have a healthy balance between carbohydrates, protein, and fat in every meal you eat.
  2. Be sure to spread your carbohydrate intake evenly among all the meals.
  3. Avoid concentrated sweets and sweeteners in your diet.
  4. Always incorporate fresh vegetable and fruit for fiber in your meal, as fiber will slow the absorption of glucose for your intestines. This will prevent sharp spikes in blood glucose.
  5. Eat at regular intervals and do not skip any meal. Even distribution of food helps prevent spikes and lows of blood glucose.
  6. Eating at regular intervals helps control hunger and prevents overeating at the next meal.
  7. Time your food intake with the action of your diabetes medication.
