Patient was educated on different kidney functions as follows:
- Production of red blood cells
- The kidneys secrete a hormone called erythropoietin, which stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells.
- Red cells in the blood are the cells that carry oxygen to the tissues of the body.
- Maintenance of blood pressure
- Kidneys monitor the blood pressure constantly and in situations when the blood pressure is low, kidneys produce angiotensin, which constricts or narrows the blood vessels.
- Also, kidneys produce a hormone called aldosterone, which increases retention of water and sodium.
- Narrowing of blood vessels and retention of sodium and water will help increase the blood pressure towards normal.
