Patient was educated on the various parts of conduction zone of the respiratory tract along with their functions as follows:
- Nose
- Nose and nasal cavities help in breathing air in from the environment.
- The walls of the nasal cavities have hairs that help in filtering the dust, foreign particles and bacteria from the air breathed in and prevent them from reaching the lungs, where they can possibly precipitate an infection.
- Nasal cavities
- The nasal cavities are moistened with mucus produced from the sinuses.
- The mucus helps in binding dust and foreign particles in the air breathed in, preventing them from reaching the lungs, warming and moistening the air inhaled through the nose.
- The nasal cavities conduct the air breathed in into the nasopharynx.
- Nasopharynx
- Nasopharynx is the part of pharynx involved in conduction of the moist and warm air from the nasal cavities into larynx, the next part of the conduction zone.
All these structures apart from helping conducting air in during inspiration also help in conducting air out during the process of expiration.
