Patient was educated on fluid needs of the body as follows:
- Fluid is essential for life, as human body is made up of approximately 60% water.
- Optimum fluid levels are needed for maintaining vital body functions. So, it is important that we replace fluid which is lost through sweat, urine, and breathing.
- Senior citizens are less sensitive to symptoms of dehydration, such as, thirst, elevation of body temperature, and dizziness and so, ignore these symptoms and the need to rehydrate.
- Patient was instructed to be aware of symptoms, such as, dark urine, reduced volume of urine output, headaches, lack of concentration, low endurance, and easy exhaustion.
- Caregiver was instructed to be aware of symptoms, such as, altered level of patient’s consciousness with confusion, dizziness, and dry oral mucosa. Caregiver was instructed to reinforce rehydration measures with the patient periodically.
