Patient was educated on Fluconazole and its mechanism of action as follows:

  1. Fluconazoleis an antifungal medication that inhibits synthesis of Ergosterol.
  2. Ergosterol is a component of fungal cell membrane and is very important for the survival of the fungus.
  3. Inhibition of sterol synthesis in the fungal cell wall by Fluconazole, makes the fungus more susceptible to Fluconazole. Thus, Fluconazole inhibits growth of the fungus.
  4. Fluconazole is used in the treatment of esophageal candidiasis, oropharyngeal candidiasis, vaginal candidiasis, and systemic candidiasis.
  5. Fluconazole is also used for treatment of opportunistic fungal infections in immunocompromised individuals, such as AIDS patients and patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer.
  6. Fluconazole is also used to inhibit the growth of some yeast infections.
