Patient was educated on Fluconazole and its mechanism of action as follows:
- Fluconazoleis an antifungal medication that inhibits synthesis of Ergosterol.
- Ergosterol is a component of fungal cell membrane and is very important for the survival of the fungus.
- Inhibition of sterol synthesis in the fungal cell wall by Fluconazole, makes the fungus more susceptible to Fluconazole. Thus, Fluconazole inhibits growth of the fungus.
- Fluconazole is used in the treatment of esophageal candidiasis, oropharyngeal candidiasis, vaginal candidiasis, and systemic candidiasis.
- Fluconazole is also used for treatment of opportunistic fungal infections in immunocompromised individuals, such as AIDS patients and patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer.
- Fluconazole is also used to inhibit the growth of some yeast infections.
