Patient was educated on Fentanyl and its mechanism of action as follows:
- Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain medication, that is administered by various routes, such as, intravenous, buccal, and transdermal.
- Fentanyl is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.
- Fentanyl binds with the opioid receptors in the brain and block the release of excitatory neurotransmitters involved with pain production. Thus, Fentanyl primarily modifies the pain signaling in the brain.
- This action of Fentanyl alters the perception of pain by the patient.
- Fentanyl is also used for breakthrough pain in cancer treatment along with other medications for pain management and relief.
- Fentanyl can also be used as part of anesthesia, to relieve the postsurgical pain, while performing surgeries involving extensive tissue damage.
