Patient was educated on Fentanyl and its mechanism of action as follows:

  1. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain medication, that is administered by various routes, such as, intravenous, buccal, and transdermal.
  2. Fentanyl is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.
  3. Fentanyl binds with the opioid receptors in the brain and block the release of excitatory neurotransmitters involved with pain production. Thus, Fentanyl primarily modifies the pain signaling in the brain.
  4. This action of Fentanyl alters the perception of pain by the patient.
  5. Fentanyl is also used for breakthrough pain in cancer treatment along with other medications for pain management and relief.
  6. Fentanyl can also be used as part of anesthesia, to relieve the postsurgical pain, while performing surgeries involving extensive tissue damage.
