Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses of Elavil as follows:
Bipolar disorder
- Elavil can be used along with other antipsychotics for management of symptoms of bipolar disorder.
Bed-wetting in children
- Action of the neurochemical acetylcholine on the smooth muscle of bladder results in contraction of bladder, bladder emptying, and urination.
- Elavil reportedly inhibits the action of acetylcholine on the bladder and thus, inhibits bladder emptying.
- This action of Elavil helps with preventing/reducing episodes of nocturnal urination and bed-wetting in children.
Sleep disorders
- By providing relief from anxiety and promoting relaxation, Elavil helps with improving the sleep patterns and so, can be used to promote sleep, in individuals with history of insomnia and difficulty falling sleep.
