Patient was educated on the effects of premature atrial contraction as follows:
- Initially when the premature beats start to occur, they are mild in intensity and less in number.
- They do not result in effective contraction of the heart. This ineffective heartbeat is not felt, until the next regularly timed beat happens. So, patients feel that they missed a beat.
- Because the premature atrial beat is ineffective in bringing cardiac contraction and consequent pumping of blood to the organs, the organs suffer lack of oxygen and nutrients during the time of that ineffective beat.
- If the premature beats are less in number, the symptoms are mild and benign, and so, premature atrial contractions can go undetected and this condition is mostly left untreated.
- If the extra beats are happening too frequently, then the organs could be suffering lack of oxygen and nutrients for increased duration, affecting the patient’s functional status. This condition needs to be treated, if symptoms are severe.
