Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Ecotrin as follows:
- Do not take Ecotrin, if you ever manifested any allergic responses to intake of Ecotrin or any other medications belonging to the NSAID group, such as, Advil, Aleve, and meloxicam. In the event of an allergic response with any of these medications, check with your physician regarding your safety with intake of Ecotrin.
- Individuals with history of bleeding disorders, such as, hemophilia, and other clotting factor deficiencies, must avoid taking Ecotrin. Ecotrin intake by these individuals can result in extreme thinning of blood with uncontrolled bleeding episodes, even on slightest injuries. Individuals can also present with episodes of internal bleeding, resulting in coughing up of blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, red colored urine, bleeding per rectum, and increased formation of ecchymosis and bleeding into the skin.
- Ecotrin is mainly metabolized in the liver. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of Ecotrin can be compromised. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in increased risk for side-effects and consequent toxicity. So, Ecotrin could be avoided in individuals with hepatic dysfunction and an alternative medication considered or used with caution, with periodical monitoring for liver functions and development of any toxic symptoms.
