- Duragesic is a synthetic opioid pain medication, that is administered by various routes, such as, intravenous, buccal, and transdermal.
- Duragesic is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.
- Duragesic binds with the opioid receptors in the brain and block the release of excitatory neurotransmitters involved with pain production. Thus, Duragesic primarily modifies the pain signaling in the brain.
- This action of Duragesic alters the perception of pain by the patient.
- Duragesic is also used for breakthrough pain in cancer treatment along with other medications for pain management and relief.
- Duragesic can also be used as part of anesthesia, to relieve the postsurgical pain, while performing surgeries involving extensive tissue damage.
