Patient was educated on Duragesic and its mechanism of action as follows:

  1. Duragesic is a synthetic opioid pain medication, that is administered by various routes, such as, intravenous, buccal, and transdermal.
  2. Duragesic is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.
  3. Duragesic binds with the opioid receptors in the brain and block the release of excitatory neurotransmitters involved with pain production. Thus, Duragesic primarily modifies the pain signaling in the brain.
  4. This action of Duragesic alters the perception of pain by the patient.
  5. Duragesic is also used for breakthrough pain in cancer treatment along with other medications for pain management and relief.
  6. Duragesic can also be used as part of anesthesia, to relieve the postsurgical pain, while performing surgeries involving extensive tissue damage.
