Patient/caregiver was educated on complications of dry skin development as follows:
- Place some pots with water near the HVAC system. As the HVAC system forces conditioned air through the home, air will pass over the water pots, thus increasing the moisture levels within the house. Elevated moisture in the environment around can help with prevent drying of skin and development of rash.
- Use mild soaps, shampoos, deodorants, and perfumes, as cosmetics could contain chemicals triggering drying of skin.
- Individuals with history of dry skin must avoid changing cosmetics, moisturizers, oils, perfumes, soaps, shampoos, & shaving creams frequently and continue with items that appeal to the nature of their skin.
- Elevated blood sugars in poorly managed diabetics and intake of diuretic medications can result in frequent urination and loss of fluid from the body, contributing to dehydration and dry skin. Observe compliance with recommended fluid intake and fluid resuscitation measures, as poor fluid consumption and consequent dehydration significantly contribute to development of dry skin. Observe compliance with limitations placed on fluid intake, if any.
