Patient/caregiver was educated on role of proteins in the body as follows:

  1. Proteins are essential in the synthesis of chemicals, such as, enzymes and hormones. Various enzymes in the body play an important role in functions, such as, digestion and absorption of food. Hormones, such as, insulin and glucagon, play an important role in general body metabolism, blood sugar control, and energy production.
  2. Proteins are very much needed for the synthesis of transport and storage proteins, such as, hemoglobin and ferritin. Hemoglobin is a protein essential for transport of oxygen by red blood cells to all the bodily organs. Ferritin is a protein essential for storage of iron reserve in the body.
  3. Protein is essential for the synthesis of antibodies, which help in building immunity and natural defense against invading bacteria and viruses.
  4. Proteins also are important for vital functions that help maintain body equilibrium, such as, acid-base balance and regulation of fluid balance.
