Patient was educated on dietary limitations for dialysis patients as follows:

  1. Select foods that are low in sodium. Excess sodium will help retain fluid and contributes to fluid overload in the body, which can be detrimental to the heart.
  2. Select foods that are low in potassium. Excess of potassium in the diet can lead to potassium built up in the body between the dialysis treatments. Excess of potassium can stop the heartbeat. Limitation on potassium intake will be good for healthy functioning of the heart.
  3. Cut down foods that are high in phosphorus. Too much phosphorus in the diet can lead to phosphate built up in the body, as the kidneys are not functioning good enough to eliminate the excess phosphorus. Increased phosphorus in the blood can lead to reduced calcium absorption and weaken bones, resulting in pathological fractures.
  4. Observe strict compliance with recommendations made regarding fluid intake limitation.
  5. Eat good amount of high quality protein every day.
