Patient was educated on dietary guidelines for adults starting on hemodialysis as follows:
- Eat liberal amounts of protein.
- Exercise control on the amount of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus in your diet.
- Controlling sodium intake may help to control blood pressure and reduce weight gains between dialysis sessions. Use herbs and spices in place of salt to make the food appealing.
- Limit your intake of milk, yogurt, and cheese, as these foods are very high in phosphorus. Maintain compliance with the phosphate binder, if you are prescribed one.
- Limit yourself to the amount of fluid recommendation per day made by your physician.
- Avoid salt substitutes containing potassium.
