Patient was educated on dietary guidelines for adults starting on hemodialysis as follows:

  1. Eat liberal amounts of protein.
  2. Exercise control on the amount of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus in your diet.
  3. Controlling sodium intake may help to control blood pressure and reduce weight gains between dialysis sessions. Use herbs and spices in place of salt to make the food appealing.
  4. Limit your intake of milk, yogurt, and cheese, as these foods are very high in phosphorus. Maintain compliance with the phosphate binder, if you are prescribed one.
  5. Limit yourself to the amount of fluid recommendation per day made by your physician.
  6. Avoid salt substitutes containing potassium.
