Patient/caregiver was educated on the side effects of using diazepam as follows:
Withdrawal syndrome
- Tapering the dose gradually over a period of time is the preferred way to quit diazepam.
- Sudden withdrawal from diazepam, after using for prolonged period of time, may lead to rebound of anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, and seizure symptoms.
Abuse potential
- Diazepam intake can be habit-forming and carries an abuse potential. The risk for addiction and abuse can be even higher, especially in individuals with history of substance abuse.
Other constitutional side-effects
- Individuals taking diazepam can also present with sexual dysfunctions, such as, compromised interest in sex, difficulty attaining and maintaining erection, and/or difficulty having an orgasm.
