Patient/caregiver was educated on foods to avoid on a renal diet as follows:
- Organ meats, such as, liver and brain from cow, chicken, pork, and lamb are very high in phosphorus content. Avoid or observe strict moderation with consumption of organ meat, to be compliant with the recommendation for low phosphorus intake.
- Avoid all bakery products containing whole grains. Limit consumption/avoid bakery products rich in phosphorus, such as, oatmeal cereals and bread made of whole wheat, dark rye, and barley. Also, mixes used during baking of bread, biscuits, muffins, pancakes, and waffles contain high amounts of phosphorus and so, must be sparingly consumed. Discourage consumption of brown rice and wild rice due to their rich phosphorus content.
- Limit consumption of fruits high in potassium, such as, bananas, oranges, peaches, and prunes. Limit consumption of/avoid nuts and seeds rich in phosphorus, such as, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hazelnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, peanuts, cashews, and pistachios.
- Dark cola drinks such as, coke and pepsi and sports drinks are high in phosphorus content. Also, alcoholic beverages, such as, beer and red wine are also considered high in phosphorus content. Limit consumption or safely avoid these drinks for compliance with low phosphorus intake recommendation.
