Patient/caregiver was educated on renal diet as follows:
- Kidneys perform the function of urine formation and elimination of excess fluid, toxins and wastes from the body.
- In individuals with compromised kidney function and renal failure, the kidneys are underperforming or totally stopped functioning, by which excess water, electrolytes, toxins, and other wastes can get accumulated in the body.
- Dialysis is a process typically performed 2 – 3 times a week, for individuals in renal failure, when the excess fluid, electrolytes, toxins, and other wastes from the blood are removed and eliminated.
- Renal diet is typically recommended for individuals in renal failure and compliance with renal diet can help patients in renal failure maintain/improve their health between the renal treatments.
- Dietary limitations recommended for these individuals help to reduce the workload on the poorly performing kidneys and prevent further deterioration of their function.
- These dietary limitations can also help with preventing accumulation of metabolic wastes, such as, urea and creatinine. It can also reduce fluid back-up, thus helping with relief of edema.
