Patient/caregiver was educated on foods to avoid on a dialysis diet  as follows:

  1. In general, high fiber bakery products are considered rich in potassium. So, avoid all bakery products containing whole bran. Limit consumption/avoid bakery products rich in potassium, such as, cereals, granola bars, and bread made of whole wheat, dark rye, and barley. Brown rice, quinoa, pasta, and millets also are considered rich in potassium.
  2. Limit consumption/avoid dairy products rich in potassium, such as, whole milk, reduced fat milk, almond milk, soymilk, and yogurt. Also, as cheese products are milk derivatives, they can be high in potassium content. Observe moderation with cheese products such as, cottage cheese, provolone cheese, gouda cheese, and ricotta cheese, due to their moderately high potassium content.
  3. Limit consumption/avoid seafoods rich in potassium, such as, salmon, halibut, cod, tuna, and trout.
  4. Limit consumption/avoid beverages rich in potassium, such as, fruit juices and punches made of bananas, oranges, and mango. Also, limit consumption of/avoid coconut water due to the extremely high potassium levels it contains. Among alcoholic beverages, beer and red wine are fairly rich in potassium content and so, avoid/observe strict moderation with consumption of these drinks for compliance with low potassium intake. You can count more on white wine, vodka, rum, gin, and whisky to help compliance with low potassium intake.
